Cosmopolitan Australia Closes

Bauer Media has announced it will be closing Cosmopolitan Australia, in sad publishing news just in.
In a statement this morning, Bauer Media ANZ CEO Paul Dykzeul said: “Today, Bauer Media announced the closure of the Cosmopolitan brand in Australia, with the December issue being the last. It has not been an easy decision to make, however, the commercial viability of the magazine in Australia is no longer sustainable.

“Magazine closures are never easy, desirable or done without careful consideration for all of those involved. We have to ensure that we are continually reshaping and defining the business so that our readers of today, and those of tomorrow, remain engaged with the content we publish and the platforms upon which we deliver.
“We are incredibly proud of the brand and the people who have been involved and represented over the last 45 years. It has helped to launch the careers of media personalities, supported great brands and causes, and inspired millions of young women across the country.
“We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the brand and its legacy over the years.”

This will mean that extension brands which have worked incredibly well over the years - Cosmopolitan Bride, which was a quarterly print edition (and recently missing from newsstands) and Cosmopolitan Pregnancy will be gone too.
RIP Aussie Cosmo! This is a sad day for publishing!

But I have a question for you: when was the last time YOU bought a hard copy, tactile magazine?

Christie Brinkley: 63 year old swimsuit body PHOTO, Sports Illustrated

Christie Brinkley is making this year's 'Sports Illustrated Swimsuitissue a family affair - alongside her two daughters.

The 63 year old - uh, yup that's her age - is a supermodel of the ages, for all time, and is returning to the pages, and here is a sneak peek.

Here is Christie with her daughters Alexa Ray Joel (dad is Billy Joel), and Sailor Brinkley Cook.

"Yes! I am excited to announce that I am back in @si_swimsuit... I figured with my gorgeous daughters @alexarayjoel and @sailorbrinkleycook by my side, whose going to be looking at me!" Christie wrote on Instagram. "Oh and my kids think I walk on water, so let's not mention the apple box concealed just under the surface."

She added, "Thank you Sports Illustrated for sending the powerful message that good things come in packages of every size and we do not come with an expiration date!"

Sailor added:

"I've had issues with my body image since before I can even remember. I grew up not loving how I looked and felt held back because of it," Sailor shared on Instagram. "My body and I have been through it all. But recently I have been liberated. I am healthy, I treat myself well, and for that I'm happy."

Sailor added: "This is more than a magazine to me and always has been. As a growing young woman, SI showed me all bodies are different and all bodies are worthy of celebrating. Thank you thank you @si_swimsuit for celebrating my beautiful mama, my beautiful sister, I, and ALL WOMEN!! How lucky am i?!"

As for Alexa Ray, who is new to modeling, the singer/songwriter excitedly added:

"It was definitely entertaining — a little bit of a reality TV moment," she told Sports Illustrated. "We all have our own style. And Sailor is kind of the young new little, perfect little, sporty little model. My mom is almost, I tease her, that she's ADD in terms of how much energy she has. She literally can't stop moving. And I'm still new at this and I was just trying to maintain my focus."

Dolly magazine closes

In shock magazine news just in, Dolly magazine is to close.

Bauer Media has axed the print edition of Dolly only seven months after it went to a bi-monthly print issue, with a tandem mobile focus.

Dolly magazine launched in 1970. In the latest Audit Bureau of Circulation figures, it had a January to June circulation of 30,010.

Nick Chan, CEO at Bauer Media, said in a statement: “Dolly readers predominantly engage with the brand on digital and social platforms and they do so with greater frequency than is possible with a bi-monthly magazine – this means it’s no longer feasible to continue publishing the magazine on a regular basis.

“Dolly has played a part in the lives of many Australians over the years, which is why we’re delighted its outstanding content continues but now, exclusively, on the channels today’s teens prefer to interact with most.”

Full-time staff at the magazine are expected to be offered other positions within Bauer.

Want to grab a copy? The last bi-monthly issue of Dolly, with three collectors covers featuring members of band In Stereo, goes on sale from December 5.

The magazine which launched Dolly Doctor (the place to get all the info you need about periods, boys, sex, etcetera) and THE model comp for young girls who aspired to be models, and the career of the inimitable Lisa Wilkinson (see her moving post below) will be kaput in its current format.

#RIPDolly. A magazine that for 46 years was a bible to so many generations of young Aussie women - including yours truly. I collected every single issue when I was in high school devouring the fashion, the pop stars, the big sisterly advice and of course, the iconic Dolly Doctor. As the old jingle went, Dolly was a girl like me. To then get my first job there was a joy I'll never forget...and I went to on spend seven years there - five of them as editor. It launched the careers of so many - journalists, editors, stylists, graphic designers, and brilliant photographers like @grahamshearer and of course models who have gone on to become household names like @mirandakerr and as you can see here, a very young and at that point, completely unknown, #NicoleKidman. This was July 1983, and the issue was one of our biggest sellers during my time as editor. Such sweet memories. Vale Dolly. So many of us will never forget you. BAZAAR Icons: 'In Bed with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West': Harper's Bazaar VIDEO + PHOTOS

Kim and Kanye are - whether you like it or not - pop culture royalty. First name basis and all, folks. In case you need it: Kardashian and West.

And now, Harper's Bazaar agree and have included them in their icons lineup. Here is the cover. The issue is onsale from August 16:

Here is an excerpt:

KIM, KANYE, KARL, AND CARINE
Paris—Karl Lagerfeld's studio, June 13, 2016.
PART ONE: KIM
STEPHEN GAN What is it like to be dubbed a fashion icon by Carine Roitfeld?
KIM KARDASHIAN WEST It's such an honor. I have always loved and respected Carine's style and her taste, so for her to choose Kanye and I is such a big deal. It was such a challenge at the beginning, no one would send clothes—they didn't even think that I would fit a sample size. They would see photos and just think that I was super curvy. Even now there are some designers that swear that I will never fit in a sample size. I'm a size two. I happen to be curvy, but for some reason I'm the master of squeezing into anything, and so it's fun to see when a designer finally sends something and they're like, "Wait, she really fit in that sample size." It's hard to find things that are unique and also fit my body type, and that are ahead of the curve and ahead of the game. I love always elevating and trying new things and I think that's where Kanye comes in, because I swear he sees everything a few steps ahead of anyone else. Kanye is a big part of my fashion story and my fashion transformation. He's my best stylist. Every look I love is definitely something that he's had a hand in helping to style or put together. My friends and my sisters will say, "I've never met anyone like you two who will just sit in a closet for hours and try on clothes and cut things up and redesign them." We just love it, and we spend a lot of time on it. We do put a lot of effort into the looks and trying to stay ahead of the game.
SG What do you think of Paris? How often do you come with Kanye?
KKW I wish we were here longer, we're only here for one day, but I'll definitely be back for the [fashion] shows this year. Paris is such a big part of my story with Kanye. When he had his second fashion show, I hadn't really left the house, I was just sitting at home hanging out a lot and he invited me to his show and my friends were like, "Why not? Just go!" That kind of sparked my relationship. We first really fell in love in Paris. And even though we got married in Italy, we spent our whole week here getting ready. All of our guests thought that we were getting married in Paris. We were going to, and then we switched the venue a month before, surprising everyone by telling them to come to Paris thinking that's where it would be. We did our bachelorette and bachelor dinners and parties and welcome party and then our rehearsal dinner at Versaille and then we told everyone, "Hey guys, we're not really getting married in Paris, everyone be outside by 11am and planes will take everyone to Italy." Paris was really part of our wedding, we have such an emotional connection here.

Famous magazine closes print edition

In magazine news just, the print edition of Famous magazine is to close.

In a piece by Mumbrella, it has been revealed that Pacific Magazines has announced it will cease publishing the print edition of Famous Magazine.

The current edition will be the last.

Says the Mumbrella article:

The publisher said 25 staff are affected by the decision and the company will look to “redeploy up to 10 into new opportunities within the business” while the remainder will be made redundant.
The weekly magazine will be replaced with a new website, FamousLive, which the publisher emphasised would be: “targeted at social and mobile video-obsessed millennials”.
Peter Zavecz, CEO, Pacific Magazines, commented on the print magazine’s closure: “The decision to cease publishing in print is never an easy one and we sincerely thank the Famous staff for their contribution to the brand. After much consideration, we feel that refocusing on a digital-only model with FamousLive is the correct one.”
The move comes amid continuing declining magazine revenues for print and sliding circulations with Pacific Magazines.
On the launch of the FamousLive website Zavecz said: “Our strategy is about adding value to audiences. The launch of FAMOUSLive refocuses our energy and investment to better tap into the immediacy, innovation and social currency this digital native market demands.”
An article in The Daily Telegraph also echoed the news.

CLEO magazine closes - after 44 years: Covers, Centrefolds, PHOTOS

NO!

It's time for CLEO magazine, the icon of Australian magazines.

It has been in our lives since 1972 - 44 years old, baby. She's my age.

SO many memories from this mag.

UPDATED: 'NO TRUTH. Read more here.

The article says:

Cleo’s website was shut down around late November/ early December, with traffic being redirected to the website of Cosmopolitan Australia, another Bauer Media title, however the spokesperson said the “digital and print run completely separate from one another” and there was “no announcement being made today” nor was anything expected to be announced regarding closure in the future.
“It is complete speculation at this point and we’ll be making no announcement to staff today or in the future,” he said.

Buying my first copy, at age 15 in 1987 - and I STILL have it. It was when Lisa Wilkinson - my woman crush to this day - was editor. It was SO scandalous at that time. Well, it was for a 15 year old!

Cleo talked: orgasm, and the clitoris, and lesbian sex, and sex positions, and ALL that stuff, most of which seems super tame today!

Of course, Ita Buttrose was founding editor, Deborah Thomas was once editor, and so many now household, iconic publishing names.

Says news.com.au:

ONCE famous for pushing the boundaries with sex tips and centrefolds, iconic Australian women’s magazine CLEO is set to fold after 44 years.

The Daily Telegraphreports several sources at Bauer Media Group, who publish CLEO, say the magazine’s editor Lucy Cousins and staff will be told of the closure today.
While a February edition is set to be published, it’s understood the magazine won’t continue after that.
The publication’s circulation has been on a steady decline, with monthly sales at 42,212 — down from 150,000 eight years ago.
News of the shut down follows a decision last January to merge the magazine’s editorial team with teen magazine Dolly.
In December, CLEO’s website was also quietly shut down, with users being diverted to Cosmopolitan.com.au — also owned by Bauer.
It continues:
While a Bauer spokesman confirmed the website’s closure to The Daily Telegraphthey said they had no announcement to make regarding the magazine.
It’s reported the annual Cleo Bachelor of the Year contest will continue under the Cosmopolitan umbrella.
Thought up by publishing giant Kerry Packer and Ita Buttrose in the 1970s, CLEO pushed the boundaries with nude male centrefolds and sex tips. It was also the subject of the 2011 miniseries Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo.
Here are some of the covers, including the VERY first:

And then, the centrefolds... oh, yes:

Yes, that's Tony Bonner. What's up, Skip?

Yup. Kyle Sandilands.

Thank you for the memories, Cleo!

ELLE Australia: Jessica Marais, January 2016

The Australian actress with arguably the best set of eyebrows I have seen - and a mesmerisingly stunning face - is the cover star of Australian ELLE magazine for January 2016: Jessica Marais.

She has spoken exclusively to ELLE Australia about motherhood, shifting boundaries and her next big role in Channel Ten’s new drama 'The Wrong Girl'.

“It’s funny; I think I looked at a lot of my life almost like a script for a long time. Where does this all end up? Instead of realising that the story is just the story and it’s happening and it’s that moment,” Jessica says, in the interview.

The interview, one of Jessica's first after a tumultuous year following her break-up with long- time partner James Stewart, reveals a fresh new start for the very talented actress (did you see her in the TV doc-drama 'Carlotta'? Incredible).

On Jessica, Justine Cullen, Editor-in-Chief of ELLE Australia said, “There’s so much to love about our January cover star, she’s super-relatable, down-to-earth and our cover captures an incredible portrait of a woman who is defining what it means to be spirited, stylish and successful in 2016.”

The January issue of ELLE Australia featuring Jessica Marais on the cover is on sale 28 December, 2016.

Charlie Hebdo: response to Paris attacks: PHOTO, magazine cover

Charlie Hebdo.

The French satirical magazine - which was the target of terror attacks and fatalities in January this year, with nine fatalities - delivered its new cover for its November 18 issue... just about to be released today.

The latest attack left at least 132 dead and many, many injured in the wake of one of the worst terrorist attacks in the city’s history.

Here’s Hebdo’s cover, which reads, Ils ont les armes. On les emmerde. On a le champagne:

The unobscured cover:

The actual, no bullshit, not watered down for publication translation is:

"They have weapons. Fuck them. We have champagne."

WOW.

Mick Fanning: ELLE Australia’s first male cover star + Jessica Hart: PHOTO

Mick Fanning - one of the world’s most sought-after surfers, triumphant in the wake of a life- affirming shark attack and on his way to securing his fourth world title - is ELLE Australia’s first male cover star. Fanning joins Australian supermodel Jessica Hart on the cover of the November issue of ELLE.

Photography credit: ELLE Australia/Simon Upton

In this massive ELLE Australia exclusive, the Aussie icons reflect on life in the fast lane, from world-class surfing to ruling the runway and launching a global beauty empire.

On the cover star combo ELLE Australia Editor-in-Chief Justine Cullen said, “With her stand- out personal style, positive outlook and entrepreneurial spirit, Jessica Hart embodies the ELLE girl, while Mick blew all of us away with how he handled the shark attack in South Africa, both in the water and out of it. He showed himself to be strong, powerful and inspiring, but humble and vulnerable at the same time – the ultimate modern male. I couldn’t think of a better man than him to be the first guy to grace the cover of ELLE Australia.

“The November issue marks a super start to summer with one of our favourite supermodels standing alongside one of our most recent superheroes - two modern day Aussie icons making it big on the global stage.”

The November edition of ELLE Australia featuring Mick Fanning and Jessica Hart on the cover is available in store and digitally from October 26.

Angelina Jolie Pitt: Vogue PHOTOS + 'By The Sea' Trailer and Behind The Scenes VIDEOS

Angelina Jolie Pitt has just featured in the latest issue of Vogue (US edition), and the photos are as beautiful as you expect. They're shot by Annie Leibovitz, so... of course.

Here is an excerpt from the interview, and the photos featuring throughout:

Angelina Jolie Pitt is calling the shots as actress, mother, philanthropist, and auteur. Next month, she and her husband, Brad Pitt, will appear as a married couple in By the Sea, which she wrote and directed and is their first on-screen outing since Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

“The director was very focused. The actress was unstable. And the writer was deeply confused,” says Angelina Jolie Pitt. Then she laughs. She’s talking about what it was like to direct herself and her husband as a married couple in her own script for By the Sea, an elegiac exploration of grief and love. Ten years after her last collaboration with Brad Pitt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith—the movie that sparked their relationship—it’s about as far from that marriage-as-war-of-assassins comedy as you can get.

“This is the only film I’ve done that is completely based on my own crazy mind,” she says, speaking with humor and intensity, bringing to life a soulless room at the Sunset Tower Hotel. Outside is glittering, heat-wave sun, umbrellas packing the Los Angeles beaches. Inside, Angelina’s in black—skinny pants, short-sleeved silk blouse—which makes her printer paper–white skin even whiter. She wears no makeup. Why bother? Her beauty has only deepened with time.
See Angelina Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt in 'By the Sea' trailer here:
And the even more interesting behind the scenes trailer (I love the commentary in this... it's all true...):
The release date for 'By The Sea' in Australia is: November 13.
