Marie Claire and Banjo & Matilda: 2013 'Sweater Exchange'

Here is a sneak peek of the new edition of Australian marie claire magazine... and a fantastic initiative set to kick off. Read on for more.

First... Behold, Scalett!

And now, marie claire and Australian luxury knitwear label Banjo & Matilda will this week launch the 2013 'Sweater Exchange'.

Founded by Banjo & Matilda in 2011, and this year in collaboration with Mission Australia, the nationwide initiative aims to collect preloved sweaters that will be redistributed to homeless women taking shelter on the streets this winter.

“When you’re homeless, your self-confidence takes an absolute thrashing,” says Paul Andrews of Mission Australia.

“A small gift like this, a small gesture, is hugely welcome and it can make a real difference to somebody’s outlook, their self-confidence and their sense of self-worth.”

Sadly, each year almost 46,000 Australian women find themselves homeless and while the figure among men has decreased, homelessness is on the rise among women – primarily caused by domestic violence.

“The Sweater Exchange is an opportunity for the everyday Australian to give back to those in need this winter, and a small gesture can make a huge difference,” says Jackie Frank, publisher/editor of marie claire.

Banjo & Matilda founder and creative director, Belynda Macpherson added: “Donating your pre-loved sweater is such an easy thing to do, and it costs nothing to give someone else a small piece of comfort and warmth.”

A number of high-profile celebrities are supporting this campaign, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicole Richie, Miranda Kerr, Elle Macpherson, Delta Goodrem, Ruby Rose and Lara Bingle.
Each personality - all pictured below - has donated their beloved jumpers, which will be displayed for the public to view at the Banjo & Matilda pop-up store (July 25 – August 3), MLC centre – Level 7, 19 Martin Place, Sydney.

Says Elle Macpherson of the initiative:

“To literally give the clothing off your own back to women in need is such a special gift”

For more details visit the MLC centre website.

All sweaters donated will be given to Mission Australia. To find out how to donate a preloved sweater to Mission Australia, visit www.banjoandmatilda.com for mailing and courier options available.

And, you can be a big part of helping to drive awareness to the campaign - marie claire is encouraging Australians to take a photo of themselves wearing the jumper they are donating to the Sweater Exchange and upload it to Instagram and Twitter with the handle @marie_claire_au and hashtag #sweaterexchange.

Sweaters will be accepted between Wednesday July 3 and Monday August 12, 2013.
