Same-sex marriage bill passes Senate

The bill to legalise same-sex marriage has passed the Senate.

However, with a sitting week cancelled in the House of Representatives, MPs will not continue debate until next week.

The bill passed without amendment, with 43 senators voting yes and 12 no.

The bill will now be debated by the Lower House when MPs return to Canberra next week, leading the way for same-sex marriage to be legalised by Christmas.
Liberal senator Dean Smith, who authored the bill, told his Senate colleagues before the vote that while it had been a difficult journey to get to this point, the debate over the bill had been "good for the soul" of all Australians.
At a glance, here is what happened: 43 voted yes, 12 voted no, some senators abstained from casting a vote. The bill passed without amendment, and will now move to the House of Representatives for further debate. House of Representatives' sitting week was cancelled, so will not resume until next Monday.

Meghan Markle Engagement Ring: PHOTO + Prince Harry + Meghan first photo

Meghan Markle showed off her engagement ring from Prince Harry, and here is the first photo, and the newly engaged couple.

Earlier this month, after receiving her parents' blessing, Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle in London.

Clarence House shared the news with the public on Monday, with all members of Harry's immediate family, and Meghan's parents also issued a statement, saying, "...We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together."

Not long after their engagement was announced, the couple appeared from Kensington Palace and posed for photographers. Meghan wore a white coat over a knee-length dress, while her new fiancé wore a navy suit.
Meghan said she was feeling "so happy," while Harry was "thrilled" and "glad it's not raining." Meghan described Harry's proposal as "very" romantic, but asked for details, he said, "That will come later."
Harry added that he knew Meghan was The One "the very first time we met."
NAWWWWWWW!
The couple will pose for an engagement portrait on Monday (UK time) and sit for an interview, to air later that night in the UK.

Meghan Markle As You've Never Seen Here Before: VIDEOS + PHOTOS

Meghan Markle is best known for her role on hit TV series 'Suits'.

And now of course, Harry's girl. She has been in a relationship with Prince Harry, Prince of Wales since June 2016, and today, on November 27, 2017, their engagement was announced. They will marry in early 2018.

But here are some things you may not have known about Meghan.

Her name is actually Rachel Meghan Markle.

She was born on August 4, 1981, and not only is she a US actress, she was also a model, and a humanitarian.

Since 2011 Markle has portrayed Rachel Zane on the legal drama series 'Suits' and is also known for her role as special agent Amy Jessup in the sci-fi thriller 'Fringe.'

She was the pretty gal on 'Horrible Bosses' - Josie's Juice has watched this movie several times... and didn't know this fun fact!

Here is the clip:

And... she was a 'Deal Or No Deal' girl! She's listed as 'holder of case #24' in 4 eps:

Markle was in a relationship with actor and producer Trevor Engelson between 2004 and 2013, marrying on September 10, 2011 and divorcing in August 2013. Since June 2016, she has been in a relationship with Prince Harry.

On November 8, 2016, an official statement was released from the Royal Family's communications secretary addressing the "wave of abuse and harassment" directed toward Markle that followed the announcement of her relationship with Prince Harry. The statement spoke to the sexism, racism and defamatory stories directed at Markle and urged the press to "pause and reflect" before driving these storylines.

In September 2017, during an interview with Vanity Fair, Markle spoke in public for the first time about her love for Prince Harry saying, "We're two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people's perception." Later that month, they made their first public appearances together at an official royal engagement – the wheelchair tennis event, and the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games in Toronto.

Meghan sees herself as a foodie, with part of her character incorporated into her 'Suits' role as Rachel Zane.

Possible wedding day invitees? She is friends with Serena Williams, and Jessica and Ben Mulroney.

Markle has said of her parents: "My dad is Caucasian and my mom is African-US... I have come to embrace [this and] say who I am, to share where I'm from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident, mixed-race woman."

Her mother, Doria Radlan, has a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California and works as a psychotherapist and yoga instructor.

Her father, of Dutch, English, Irish and Scottish descent is an Emmy award winning lighting director Thomas W. Markle, whose profession resulted in a young Meghan often visiting the set of 'Married... with Children'.

Markle grew up in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles  where, from age five, she was educated at private schools: at Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse and later at Immaculate Heart High School a girls only Catholic school in Los Angeles.

She graduated in 2003 from Northwestern University near Chicago, where she took theatre studies before completing her bachelor's degree in theatre and international studies; coursework included an internship at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires.

Here is more you may not know about Meghan:

To support herself between early acting jobs she worked as a freelance calligrapher and took on several contract acting and modeling jobs including that stint as a 'briefcase girl' on 'Deal Or No Deal'.

In 2002, Markle appeared in an episode of the daytime soap opera, 'General Hospital'. She appeared in 'Fringe' as Junior Agent Amy Jessup in the first two episodes of its second season. Since July 2011 she has played paralegal Rachel Zane on the 'Suits'.

Did you know Markle has appeared in two 2010 films? 'Get Him To The Greek' and 'Remember Me', and in 'Horrible Bosses' in 2011, see clip above.

She appeared in the short film 'The Candidate' as a secretary in 2012. She has also appeared in episodes of 'Century City', 'Cuts', 'Love, Inc, 'The War At Home', 90210, 'Knight Rider', 'Without A Trace', 'The Apostles', 'CSI: NY', 'The League' and 'Castle'.

Markle is also a writer!
She is founder and editor-in-chief of lifestyle website 'The Tig', which closed in April 2017.

In November 2016 Markle and Canadian clothing company Reitmans released a line of women's fashion workwear.

In 2016, Markle became a global ambassador for World Vision Canada, traveling to Rwanda for the Clean Water Campaign.

She has also worked with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women as an Advocate.

Markle was a counsellor for international charity One Young World, speaking at the 2014 annual summit in Dublin on the topics of gender equality and modern-day slavery. She also attended the 2016 summit in Ottawa. And the biggest 'shock' of all?

Meghan is a distant relation of Prince Harry. Their common ancestors are Elizabeth Bowes (1505– c.1572) and her husband, Richard Bowes, son of Sir Ralph Bowes of Streatlam Castle and High Sheriff of County Durham – ancestors of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (nee Bowes-Lyon).

MIND. BLOWN.

And more for 'Suits' fans:

Here is a wrap of her transformation:

NIVEA Invisible for Black and White is the World’s No.1 Anti-stain deodorant* and NIVEA deodorant’s newest innovation Invisible for Black & White Fresh, not only provides 48-hour protection against odour and perspiration, in a world-first it also helps protect clothes against yellow stains on white fabrics and white marks on dark fabrics. Game changer!

White marks are residues of the antiperspirant salts used in the deodorant. NIVEA had already succeeded to solve this problem thanks to a special technology developed in 2005.
The formula works by using aluminium salts to dissolve white residue in an emulsion, masked with oils. This anti-white mark technology makes white residue invisible.

To solve the age-old problem of clothes slowly yellowing over time, NIVEA’s research and development team worked with the world’s leading experts in independent textile testing, The Hohenstein Institute, to find a solution. Research was conducted over many years with hundreds of fabrics tested to ensure the right formula and technology could be found.

NIVEA in their collaboration with the Hohenstein institute determined that yellow stains often appear over time, typically after several washes and that detergent actually made the problem worse, not better.

With this information at hand, the next step was to search for compounds that would form a barrier around the textile fibres, before the staining substances could penetrate them.
With this new technology, the substances that cause staining cannot stick to fabric, making them easier to remove in the washing machine. A world first in textile protection!

As a result of this breakthrough technology, NIVEA is a leader in the anti-stain deodorant category.

What’s more, NIVEA understands that everyone has different deodorant preferences, Invisible for Black & White Fresh is available in:
  • An aerosol and roll-on format for men
  • An aerosol and roll-on format for women

Don Burke speaks - exclusive interview, A Current Affair: VIDEO

Don Burke today sat down for an interview with Tracy Grimshaw from Channel 9's 'A Current Affair', in which he is interviewed on the allegations that he was a "sexual predator" and a "psychotic bully".

The full interview screens tonight on 7pm on Channel 9.

Here is a preview:

The allegations are explosive:

"For almost two decades Don Burke was one of the most powerful men in Australia's entertainment industry. His popular gardening program Burke's Backyard was a ratings juggernaut for the Nine Network until it was unceremoniously axed in 2004.
But now a major Fairfax Media/ABC investigation can reveal that behind the scenes those who worked with Burke claim he was a "psychotic bully", a "misogynist" and a "sexual predator" who indecently assaulted, sexually harassed and bullied a string of female employees."

The article continues:

""He was a vile, vile human being," said Bridget Ninness, a former producer on Burke's Backyard, who later launched legal action against Burke for psychological abuse. "He was lewd and he was crude" and his constant talk of sex was "designed to confront you and to demean you", she said.

Louise Langdon, a former researcher, was subjected to ongoing harassment by Burke which included trying to remove her top, and on another occasion Burke "put his foot into my rear end, with the view to checking the tone of my ... my backside". He then stated that the firmness of her "backside" wasn't "up to scratch""

Hottest 100 date change: here's why

In music news just in, the Triple J Hottest 100 has a new home. It won't be on Australia Day.

Says the announcement on the ABC site:

You heard right, our biggest music celebration of the year has a new date! On Saturday 27 January 2018 we’ll be counting down the Hottest 100 songs of the year, as voted by you. Then, we’ll back it up on Sunday with the songs that just missed out, the Hottest 200.
Welcome to the Hottest 100 Weekend. It’s the countdown you love, made bigger!
Here is the Insta post:
Continues the article:
triple j is making this move after hearing directly from you. Heaps of you took part in our online survey as part of our review of the date of the Hottest 100. (You can read more about that process below.) You told us how much you love the countdown and most of you are up for a new day. We all agreed that the Hottest 100 shouldn’t be part of a debate about the day it’s on. The only debate should be about the songs (“Ya joking shoulda been higher”).
triple j will be freed up to celebrate Australia Day as its own event too. We have some new programming planned for 26 January (more on that later).
So, get your crew together and make sure you keep the 4th weekend in January free, ‘cause the Hottest 100 Weekend is gonna be huge.
Here is what you need to know:
Tues 12 Dec 2017: Voting opens
Mon 22 Jan 2018: Voting closes
Fri 26 Jan 2018: Australia Day
Sat 27 Jan 2018: Hottest 100
Sun 28 Jan 2018: Hottest 200
Why did they choose the fourth weekend in January?

We went with the fourth weekend of January because we wanted to keep all the best bits you love about the Hottest 100 – the music and being with your mates on a day that most people have off – and still host it at the same time in summer you’re used to. It also means we can follow up that weekend with the 200-101 countdown.

It's not the first time there has been a date change!

No, the Hottest 100 has been held on a few different dates in the past so it’s not the first time it’s moved around. The first ever countdown was held on 5 March, 1989 and the countdown didn’t regularly match up with 26 January until 1998. In fact, the 2004 countdown was on 25 January. So, the date of the countdown has moved around and though the Hottest 100 has mostly been held on Australia Day, it’s not about Australia Day.

So, now the cat is out of the bag:

Angela Bishop's Husband Peter Baikie Dies, age 54

Angela Bishop, a firm fixture on our TV screens for many years, as entertainment reporter for Channel 10, has had a tragedy in her family - her husband Peter Baikie has died, after being diagnosed with a "rare form of cancer" in February 2016.

A statement was released on today, with Bishop stating she was "devastated".

"It is with a heavy heart that Angela Bishop, family and friends advise you of the passing of Angela's much-loved husband, Peter Baikie," the statement said.

"Peter is the adored father of Amelia, brother of Wendy Rylance, cherished son-in-law of Bronwyn Bishop and brother-in-law of Sally Bishop."

"His courage in fighting this disease left all that shared his journey full of immense admiration. He found his tower of strength in his wife Angela and the love of his daughter Amelia."

"He fought courageously till the end and passed away on Wednesday 22nd November 2017 peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends."

Peter, Amelia, and Angela. Photo: supplied
Angela Bishop, 50, is the daughter of former federal politician Bronwyn Bishop. Angela and Peter's daughter Amelia is age 10. Josie's Juice recalls being pregnant at the same time as Angela.

In this article, Angela said:

"Amelia is everything to us. I didn't plan on having her late, that was just when I met my husband [they married in 2005]. And then it took us a couple of years to have her. I would have loved for it to happen earlier.

"We were ready, but nature took a while to catch up. We feel utterly blessed to have her and maybe that's because it took a while."

The statement contained: "Peter was a car fanatic, a motorbike lover and a gifted mechanic. He embraced life with all it had to offer him - but without doubt his family and friends were the highlights in his world."

"The love shown to Angela and family during his final days by Peter's circle of friends is testament to the man he was. He will be dearly missed but forever loved."

RIP Peter. Such a sad story.
