The movie follows the journey of Katie, a mysterious young woman who turns up in the small North Carolina town of Southport.
Naturally, her sudden arrival raises questions about the beautiful young woman, and she attempts to keep to herself, but a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed man with a kind heart and two young kids in tow. And another, with her straight shooter neighbour, Jo.
Soon, Katie begins to slowly let down her guard and becomes increasingly attached to Alex and his family. All the while, Katie begins to fall in love but struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her: a past that set her on a fearful journey across the country, where she eventually ends up at the 'safe haven' of Southport. With Jo's coaxing stubborn support, Katie soon realises she must choose between a life the usual, transient life she has led, to a far deeper one, with more risks and more substance.
