You will adore Australia’s newest swimwear designer - Kylie van Wanrooy - who will be unveiling her new collection at the Sydney Summer Love Vintage Show this week [September 14 to 16 at Canterbury Racecourse Function Centre]. See the divine pics below, plus more photos, inspired by the exhibitors at the show:

Kylie is hoping that her unique approach to designing will have the average Australian woman [she is a size 14, after all] embracing her first collection when it is launched at the event.

Unlike most designers who start out by designing their collection for size 8 and 10 women then do the 'up-size', Kylie designs her pieces for the average sized 12 and 14 women.

She also likes 'looking backwards' for her designs - drawing inspiration from 1950s swimwear when curvaceous, feminine figures were plentiful.

Being a size 14 herself - and a pattern maker of 20 years - Kylie is well qualified to create what she does, and she's confident Australian women will embrace her first collection of 'Beyond the Sea' swimwear, borne from her frustration with a lack of stylish swimwear for women her size.

She says, “I first conceived the idea while visiting Wet 'n' Wild on the Gold Coast, and noticed that the variety of swimwear on women my age was lacklustre; either looking as if they were made for adolescents or for the over 60 crowd with no happy medium.” She adds, “Being a size 14/16 with DD cup, I was also sensitive to the fact the costume should not only look good but also provide adequate bust support."

Her inspiration also came her family’s love for vintage, with her most vivid memory as a child being her playing with her mother’s deck of cards that were adorned with beautiful pin-up girls wearing similar styled bathing suits.

“My whole family has always been into vintage - they all own vintage cars, we all love vintage clothing - it’s just in the blood!” she says.

Kylie’s launch range will feature nine styles in a choice of six striking prints including black and stripes, animal print and a cheeky heart design.

Kylie’s one piece swimsuits and mid-rise two pieces complement a womanly figure, with adequate support included in the bust, and the bottoms cut to enhance feminine curves. 

The range will be presented at the event in complete retro style, with old style beach hut change rooms.
