Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver separate - why do long-term marriages fall apart?

As everyone knows, only the two people involved in a marriage know exactly what happens in that marriage... especially those that fall apart after decades together.

You have the 'starter marriage', the marriage that falls apart around the time of the seven year itch... but what about the marriage that is seemingly rock solid?

With news just in that former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, have separated, with Shriver moving out of their US mansion while the two determine the next step in their 25-year marriage, it will no doubt raise eyebrows - and more than a few questions - about exactly what happened.

The most common question will be: why, after all these years?

Don't they know each other well enough by now?

It's not always that black and white, as those who have been through a divorce will tell you, especially the break-ups where there is "nothing wrong."

And by that I mean, no domestic violence, no cheating, no gambling of life's savings, no addictions... just... no love anymore.

Sure, the no love part may lead to cheating, but it's not the catalyst for wanting to be apart in the first place.

The former first couple confirmed the separation in a joint statement released on Monday after questions were raised by the Los Angeles Times.

"This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," the statement read. "After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together. At this time, we are living apart while we work on the future of our relationship.

"We consider this a private matter and neither we nor any of our friends or family will have further comment. We ask for compassion and respect from the media and the public."

Do you know a couple that split after years of marriage? Are you one half of that couple? What do you think of marriage breakdowns after eons together? Comment (remain anonymous if you wish).
