Matt Bomer as Christian Grey: "Hollywood is homophobic" - Bret Easton Ellis

So, I was watching a sit down chat with the guys from 'Magic Mike' just yesterday [must've been an old clip on my Foxtel IQ] and something had been 'bugging' me for eons... what IS the name of that too hot actor in the line-up? No, not that Adonis Armenian-Italian specimen Joe Manganiello, the other one... the impossibly hot one.

Yeah, he'd be THE perfect choice for the film version of 'Fifty Shades of Grey'!

This hoax magazine cover echoed that:

I had zilch idea that this guy - who I now know as Matt Bomer - is gay. I noticed his wedding ring during the interview, but had no idea if he was married to a man or a woman. That wouldn't have changed my opinion of him - that he is 'ridiculously-good-looking'. I mean, look at him - he is breathtakingly handsome.

And so, I read with interest this morning that with Matt Bomer a likely name thrown in the ring to play Christian Grey, an interesting Twitter tirade happened overnight involving acclaimed author Bret Easton Ellis, and, well the Twitterverse.

Here is an excerpt from The Huffington Post:

The 34-year-old Bomer has been hotly linked to the movie version of E. L. James's bestseller, although Ryan Gosling and "Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder are also said to be fan favorites for the male lead. The "White Collar" star has been praised in both the media and the blogosphere for acknowledging his sexuality, which had been the subject of rampant media speculation, in a surprisingly subtle way when he thanked his partner and children at an awards ceremony in February.

And here is how it Bret's Tweets played out on Twitter, starting from the bottom Tweet:

He went on to add:

"Hollywood is the most homophobic place in the entire world," he tweeted early Wednesday. "Why Brokeback Mountain was a hit was because it starred two beautiful actors instead of two real ugly characters from the story. Producers."

It got me thinking: wait, didn't straight actors Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas play gay lovers in 'Philadelphia' [still one of my fave dramatic movies] convincingly because they did it with so much heart?

Why should this be any different?

Conversely, Neil Patrick Harris has been playing a straight man for years in 'How I Met Your Mother'. I am sure a brainstorm would produce plenty of other examples where an actor and actress' real life sexuality has done nothing to hamper how they play out a role on screen.

Thoughts?
