'The Sapphires' - review + soundtrack giveaway

'The Sapphires' is the kind of feelgood flick you have no guilt watching [ie, it's not Hollywood schmaltz, it's inspired by true events, history plays an important part in the movie, and the Indigenous community gets the kind of recognition it deserves].

The film is about four Indigenous women - Gail [Deborah Mailman], Julie [Jessica Mauboy], Kay [Shari Sebbens], and Cynthia [Miranda Tapsell] - who are discovered by a talent scout, perfectly cast with the irrepressible Chris O'Dowd. They form a singing group called 'The Sapphires' and travel to Vietnam in 1968 to sing for the troops at war.

I couldn't take my eyes - or ears - off Jessica Mauboy, Deborah Mailman has some serious acting chops, Shari Shebbens just glows on screen in her first movie role, and Miranda Tapsell adds a certain chutzpah to the story [one particular line had the audience laugh out loud].

The movie made its world premiere at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was very warmly received [think long standing ovation] and is set for release in Australia on 9 August.

Here is the captivating trailer:

And some pivotal early scenes:

For me, the soundtrack is IT in the movie - lifts it to fabulous heights. And so, some clips:

Ah, Jessica Mauboy's voice - yep, all day:

Bring it home, Jess:

Told you... it's all about the music.

Oh, look at that: I have FIVE copies of the soundtrack to give away, thanks to Sony Music.

Here's what you need to do to be in the running to win one:

- Share this link on your Facebook wall

- Hit 'like' on Josie's Juice Facebook page [top right hand corner of this page]

Sony Music just released the soundtrack on July 27, and includes all the songs as featured in the film including some of the biggest hits of the 60s, performed by the original artists: 'Soul Man' and 'Hold On! I’m A Comin’ by Sam & Dave, and 'Run Through The Jungle' by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Plus Jessica Mauboy showcases her sensational, sweet vocals on many of the tracks including soul classics such as 'What A Man', 'I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)', 'Land of 1000 Dances' and 'Who’s Loving You', and the catchy first single, 'Gotcha' - an original song penned (with Louis Schrool and Ilan Kidron from the Potbelleez) for the film, which draws its inspiration from the sounds of the 60s.

Ah, okay: let's listen to Jessica's voice again - here are the just-released clips and her versions of the songs from the movie:

And new song 'Gotcha':

Here's the soundtrack cover, and then, some movie stills and the movie poster:

  1. I will always love I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch). The girls do a good job with it without deviating too much from the original. Love a good ol Motown tune:)
