The story is centred on 'The Burlesque Lounge', with its best days behind it. Tess (Cher), owner of the venue and a retired dancer, struggles to keep the theatre from going down the tubes.

Meanwhile, the life of Ali (Christina Aguilera), a girl from Iowa, is about to change dramatically. Hired by Tess as a waitress at the Lounge, Ali escapes her past and quickly learns the art of burlesque.
