Earlier this year it was announced that uber model Gisele Bündchen would become the new face of Chanel No. 5 and now, six months later, she has collabed with Australian director Baz Luhrmann to create a short film celebrating the iconic fragrance; it's a three-and-a-half-minute piece that will be cut down into 30-second and 60-second clips for TV.
In the film, Baz looks at the paradox of the Chanel woman, obv embodied by Gisele:
"One minute she's on the beach, and the next she's in a gorgeous frock," he said. Gisele is the perfect person to embody that spirit, according to Luhrmann, since she herself is a woman who wears many hats.
He adds about his muse: "She has a job where she creates these aspirational images, but in real life, she is a wife and a mother."
Here is the beautiful clip:
This is Baz's second short film for Chanel No. 5. The first starred Nicole Kidman, filmed almost 11 years ago.
He reveals: "The piece with Nicole was such a special, magical moment. She was at the height of her fame. My wife and I had just had our first child; we actually had to do the fittings with Nicole via Skype."
Some insider info: Gisele can, in fact, surf. "She's a great surfer, and she can stand up on the board," said Baz. Although she did not do her own stunts for this piece. "We didn't want to put her in any kind of danger."
Back to la Gisele. Here's more on her and all the behind the scenes magic. Gosh, I love this stuff (thanks to my resourceful friend Thereyns for scouting these clips). All these clips tell the entire story behind it all. Each is fascinating.
More fun facts about the short film:
The beautiful beach house is in Montauk.
"We needed to have a beach that was near a great home so we could jump from the beach to the house and then show Gisele going to a big city. There was pragmatic consideration in choosing the location, and the east coast just made the most sense," said Baz. While Montauk is a great spot to surf, it doesn't have waves like you see in the film. That scene was filmed in Fiji.
If you look closely as the waves crest and crash over Gisele, for one split second they make a double "C" shape. "That was my idea," says Baz. "The number five on the back of Gisele's wetsuit was Karl's [Lagerfeld]. One day we were sitting and planning out the looks for the film, and he just quickly sketched out the wetsuit and said to me, 'Look at this.' I think he might be planning to produce them."
